Empty shops in Brentwood
Empty shops in Brentwood

Your Local Labour team is calling for action, as Brentwood High Street has seen an escalation in empty shops and a distinct loss of variety of options, especially for clothes shops. With the losses of New Look, Next and now Monsoon all leaving the High Street there are few clothes shopping options available. With Barclays announcing it will be closing in May 2024, even more long term tenants are set to leave. Sainsbury’s appears to be at capacity and the lack of competition, with only Iceland nearby, is causing real issues for local people. While the Council owns the Baytree Centre and has an improvement plan, the Council also needs to consider targeted options for business rates relief as well as using all in its power to encourage landlords to keep rents reasonable to keep shops on the High Street occupied and boost local entrepreneurship.

Cllr Dr Tim Barrett said: “We are at acrossroads for our High Street and we need to make sure the future is bright. Not only in delivering the new Baytree Centre, but helpingĀ  businesses thrive in our High Street.”
